I remember an incident working for an MNC during the early part of my career when a slight delay in completing my timesheet became an issue. There was a flurry of email & calls from my manager to complete the same immediately. To be honest, I felt bad, that being a star performer, working so seriously and passionately on my projects, I am being asked to give account of my time spent. It was hard for me to understand the significance of timesheets at that point of time.
Now being a Co-founder of LegalXGen, which is a Law Practice Automation & Analytics Software, I get opportunity to interact with Lawyers and Law Firms and got to understand the significance of timesheets & how it impacts the business in general.
Timesheet Perception:
Sometimes I feel lots of resistance shown, whenever the team is asked to enter the timesheet. There are mainly 2 reasons for the same,
- Work is the first priority, let’s leave the timesheet for later.
- Why am I asked to fill timesheet daily? Is it lack of trust or a mere formality?
Timesheet Reality:
One of my clients (Founding partner of one of the top 20 law firms in India) explained the concept of “TIMESHEET” which remains engraved in my mind till date. He told I do not want to keep account of your day/week, it’s mainly to facilitate the billing so that we’re able to bill the time spent
Timesheet Importance:
- First and foremost reason is “TIME IS MONEY” unless account of the time spent is not maintained accurately, it can’t be billed. So, make sure any time spent for the client is recorded and billed. It’s good for the growth of firm as well as the individuals. If the firm is making more revenue, obviously everyone can expect better growth and stability.
- It helps to make Organized and Efficient. Timesheet arithmetic can help to plan the work much better, organized and efficient.
So, track your time for the better growth….
